Katrina 3393 Ster-Preferent
In the spring of 1954, D.J. Brouwer went with his father on a motorbike to the Northeast Polder to buy a horse.
Katrina was pulling the plough and this mare took his fancy right away.
Nevertheless, the deal did not come off; the price (Dfl. 1100) was considered too high; at the time such a horse would fetch round Dfl. 700.
However, on the way home, Brouwer Senior said: ‘Son I think you are wrong, if you still like her, you should buy her’.
So they went back and the deal was closed.
Afterwards it turned out they had brought value for money.
Katrina was a super work horse, drew carriage and horse sleigh, gave birth to a foal each year and at breeding days carried away first price ten times.
With the breeding group she won three first prizes: in 1961, 1963 and 1966.
Katrina began her career as first premium foal and was awarded 1B as a yearling at the Central Inspection in 1951.
As a three-year old she was designated star, measuring 1.60.
Harnessed to the carriage, she won first prize in 1961.
With her daughter Claeske she belonged to the Wolvega ballet group.
With an Ynte mother and a Danilo grandmother, Katrina has fist class blood.
Although underestimated initially, Auke afterwards proved to have achieved excellent breeding results.
The current pedigrees feature the names of 20 fine mares sired by Auke, including 10 models and five preferent mares: Ganneke (pedigree 32); Lobbrich (pedigree 70); Henkie (pedigree 102); Gona (pedigree 103) and Katrina.
The prime transmitter Nanne also had an Auke mother.
Aukje’s mother was Stedina (pedigree 50), who when 19 years old became model.
She reached the age of 27.
In 1964, Katrina was declared preferent on account of her sons Jetse and Goitzen, the latter also by Ritske (1961) and her daughters Trees, Claeske and Karoliene.
With Karoliene, Tsj. Bles participated in horse shows in 1966/1967.
She was, says Bles, a fine horse with an elegant swan neck and a great deal of action in the forehand.
The mare was placed third and fourth.
The stallion Jetse 225 was approved in 1965.
In that year he was classed 1B and went up to 1A in 1966.
Phryso described him as ‘a stallion of extraordinary class, with a neat head, well-shaped neck, good shoulders, excellent type characteristics and well-developed for a young stallion’.
As late as 1974, Colenbrander wrote: ‘Type excellent, gaits very good, a real Friesian; appealing’.
At the age of 12, Jetse was carried off on account of ill health.
The stallion was in service in the difficult period 1965-1976.
Fourteen of his daughters were entered: 2 models and 8 stars.
Fortunately, his blood has been preserved via his daughters and especially through Rolanda (Model / Preferent) of W. Jorritsma.
As a show horse she brought her owner prize money totalling Dfl. 6000.
Trees
Katrina’s eldest daughter was Trees 4403, model.
The unrivalled ambassador of the Friesian horse, G. Griepsma, of Joure, bought her in 1961, his first Friesian.
The first time he was seen with her was in Blauwhuis, in the single horse draught category, carrying away the fourth prize.
On this occasion he said: ‘never a prouder man in Blauwhuis than I’.
Three daughters of Trees were registered.
The eldest, Greetha by Ewold 181, was to be the mother of Pibe Bouke.
The other two Ritske mares Mees and Sonja have records covering 26 years.
Sonja had already been declared preferent.
Mees was registered as a three year old, being described as follows: ‘Good type, excellent forehand, good withers. Walk very good, trot very smooth’.
At the Central Inspections in 1966, 1967 and 1968 she won second premiums.
Her offspring comprised eleven foals, including five colts and six fillies.
Mees took several first prizes at the breeding days.
In 1983, her breeding group was awarded 1A and various first prizes in other years.
She produced an unforgettably beautiful daughter, Zarine 5588 Model + Preferent, who in 1987 died at 18 years old when foaling.
Sired by Pibe Bouke, she was inbred on the mother line.
When 14, Zarine still became the unrivalled champion of the breeding day in Wolvega.
Earlier, she had won numerous breeding day prizes.
Among her daughters are the model mares Afke 7109, who came second in the best-performing show horse category at the 1988 Central Inspection and Froukje, who classed 1A at the Central Inspection in 1989 and 1B in 1991.
In addition to these models, Zarine’s offspring include three star daughters.
Another daughter of Mees is Immy 6038 star, who obtained, among other prizes, a 1B at the 1983 breeding day; this mare is the mother of Rianca, youth champion at the Central Inspection and richly awarded at breeding days, including 1D (1983), 1B (1988), best-performing saddle horse in Wolvega in 1984, fourth and first premium in 1986.
Presented by hand Rianca still carried away a first premium at the Central Inspection as late as 1986.
Sonja
Jellesma, Rotstergaast is wildly enthusiastic about Sonja’s fiery character.
She was used for all the farm work, also for ‘tilting the ring’ contests.
In the surrounding areas she took part in horse shows (Rijs), took a first in the ordinary category (round 1972/1973), and was with Kathinka in pairs contests. In 1971, Sonja was pronounced breeding day’s champion in Blauwhuis, where she could be seen in the champion ring for many years and where she later still took the reserve title.
She had six daughters to her name, four of whom are stars.
Her daughter Fanny 7618 star was rated 1A at the Central Inspection 1987.
Other familiar horses of the group of 15 foals were Douwe (Z-driving with Zwanenburg) and Ate R. 188, who in 1984 won the competition, taking 7 firsts in 15 contests.
In 1983, at the age of 26, Sonja died with the Bergsma family of Noordwolde.
Another line in pedigree 78 is that of Wilkje Model + Preferent, mother of the famous show horse Odillia (total prize money Dfl. 10.900) and the dressage stallions Feycko and Zjoerd.
The stallion Nammen comes from a granddaughter of Wilkje.
